The Love Jewce: Is Dating Dead?
You tell us
By: Andria Kaplan
Fifty years ago we would have been meeting our future husbands from sidduchs and would be asked to do a waltz at a swanky club. Men were once the sole breadwinners of the family and women stayed home braiding challah on Fridays.
Well, it’s 2014 and times are changing. In the 1950's, women at the age of 20 were already getting hitched. Oh the days of being a housewife. Today, however, the average woman will not wed until around the 27-years-old mark and the average male around 29.
The average age of getting married isn’t all that has changed either in the game of love.... Dating has too.
We don’t date. Dating is dead.
As the Millennial generation has grown up being more advanced in technology than any other generation we’re not so advanced in the dating department. Swiping left and right has led us to nothing but “getting drinks.” Being courted by our male counterparts is a thing of the past.
Yes, meeting for drinks is a great introduction to seeing if a first date is the line up but the romance and enticing feeling of a first date has disappeared.
Is this due to the lack of interpersonal and face to face relationships our generation is lacking? The question I truly pose is that if this downfall of “first dates” is due to the 750 million swipes per day happening on apps such as Tinder?
As women, do we even notice the decrease in first dates? Dating is dead but does it really bother us as women? We can have the attention of males in an instant because of technology. If you’re feeling lonely there’s only about 100 different ways to seek a male's attention online or via an app. As we focus on growing our careers and put traditional roles to the back burner are we as women to blame for the lack of dates and overall chivalry?
