With the conflict still raging between Israelis and Palestinians, we sometimes forget that there's more going on in Israel than just war and settlements. It’s easy to forget the beauty in the country, its citizens, and its youth, but it’s something that Dafy Hagai captures in each of her stunning photographs.

A young photographer that works from both New York and Tel Aviv, Hagai’s newest collection Israeli Girls is a liberating, feminist work of art and unadulterated genius. Each image captures the uniqueness and personality of the young women who pose as her subjects.

Many of the images feel as though they’ve been pulled straight out of the late 90’s, yet all of them are relatable to the young women of today. The photos explore budding female sexuality and power, and challenge both viewer expectations and any preconceived ideas about these empowered Israeli girls.

We at Shalom Life got a chance to speak with the brilliant photographer about Israeli Girls, her inspiration, and some of her upcoming projects.

Shalom Life: What got you interested in photography and when did you first start taking pictures?

Dafy Haiga: I studied for a visual communications degree, so I was into animation and video first, and then from directing and shooting video projects I went on to photography - it was around three years ago. I was modeling at that time for an Israeli female fashion photographer named Sharon Derhy and then I realized I can model for myself and started shooting self portraits. I then went on to doing more fashion and personal projects.

What's been the hardest challenge working in photography?

Trying to find commercial projects that are also interesting and challenging.

What's been the biggest reward working in your field?

Knowing that I may have influenced the way some people look at what's around them.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Films, tumblr, interesting locations and architecture, teenage girls.

Why have you chosen Israel girls for your latest project?

I thought most people don't really have an image of how youth culture looks like in a place like Israel, and especially when you think about girls and sexuality, so I wanted to show that.

How does it feel to have your collection, Israel Girls, being turned into a book?

It feels really good to have your work turned into something psychical, especially now when everything is online. Also, I think it's very cool to have it printed as a collection and see how the photos work together.

What are you hoping comes from having your photos compiled into a book? What are you most excited about by it?

I want to have an "Israeli Girls" exhibition. I guess I'm most excited about having a book with my work, but also the fact that it became conversational and brought this subject to people's attention.

Do you have any upcoming projects that we can look forward to?

I'm working on a new book to be released next year and also on a few interesting commercial collaborations coming soon.
