If you haven’t seen Fabrik: The Legend of M. Rabinowitz, playing at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, then you’re definitely missing out.

Fabrik follows the story of Moritz Rabinowitz who, as a child, fled to Norway from Poland during a time when anti-semitism was beginning to sweep through Europe during the years leading up to the Holocaust. A father and a husband, Rabinowitz becomes one of Norway’s leading makers of men’s clothing and takes a stand against anti-semitism.

The play, which combines puppetry and musical numbers in a fun and refreshing fashion, is bound to captivate audiences and make you want more. The play was first created, and produced, by New York’s Wakka Wakka Productions and Norland Visual Theatre. However this is the premier production for Sara Schwartz Geller Productions, a budding Canadian production company headed by Sara Schwartz Geller.

Geller has always loved theatre, and new it was what she wanted to do from an early age. She became involved with the performing arts during her time in high school, and worked on productions during her time in university. Geller went on to work at Canada’s National Arts Centre, then moved to San Francisco to work with The Jewish Theatre San Francisco as an actor in some shows, an Executive Director in others, over the course of the last ten years. Moving back to Toronto, Geller recently founded her own production company to help bring great Jewish theatre to Torontonians.

We at Shalom Life got a chance to speak with the exceptionally talented Geller, and pick her brain about Fabrik, her production company, and why she decided to get involved with theatre at all.
