It’s approaching the end of an era for the Late Show With David Letterman. Tuesday night marked Letterman’s second to last episode, and tonight will be his final appearance on the show.
Last night Letterman’s show came full circle, as one of his first very first guests on the show, Bill Murray, marked one of his final ones. Murray had made an astounding 44 appearances on Letterman’s Late Show, and it only felt right for him to see the show come to a close. Murray is just one of the recent iconic guests to grace Letterman’s set as he counts down his final days of hosting the Late Show, which has welcomed celebrities such as Jerry Seinfeld in the last few weeks.
In addition to Murray’s appearance, Bob Dylan appeared as Letterman’s last ever musical guest (we’re guessing this sadly means that tonight’s show will be void of a musical performance).
To mark Dylan’s introduction, Letterman said to the audience, “I spend a lot of time, like everybody does, driving around with my son Harry. Sometimes you feel like you take an opportunity to teach him or reinforce things for him. I say, ‘Harry, what are the two most important things to know in the world? There’s really only two things you need to know.’ He says, ‘One, you have to be nice to other people.’ I said, ‘That’s right. And what’s the other one?’ He says, ‘The greatest songwriter of modern times is Bob Dylan.’ That’s all you need to know in life.”
Letterman sort of had a point.
Dylan’s appearance on the show marked his first performance in the Ed Sullivan Theater in over 20 years. He first appeared on the Late Show in 1993 and played his iconic song “Forever Young.” Last night, however, Dylan moved viewers with his meaningful song “The Night We Called It A Day.”
It was a wonderfully fitting song for the conclusion of the Late Show With David Letterman, and was an absolutely beautiful performance.
