One of the most popular social media channels, Instagram is simply ripe with pages offering either a subtle or discernible Jewish theme, and I’m not just talking about @TheFatJewish either - though it is nice to see him taking responsibility (somewhat) for the plagiarism scandal that’s likely filled your Facebook wall. From pseudo celebrities like the girl behind @CrazyJewishMom to the IDF-touting man (likely) behind @HotIsraeliArmyGirls, there’s no shortage of photos featuring Jewish people, things, and places. You get the idea.

Now, a new page has been garnering the attention of the online-dwelling members of our Tribe, following a couple’s conversion into modern Orthodoxy: @2HipJews.

Putting the ‘modern’ into ‘modern Orthodox’, @2HipJews invite Instagram users to follow along on a conversion process that aims to show that you can still eat awesome food, be stylish, and have a heck of a good time while embarking on the road to religiousness.

For many people who’ve converted to modern Orthodoxy, it’s normally an intimate and private affair. For the Moses and Tzipora (the two have decided to stay anonymous to remain elusive) behind @2HipJews, however, the page is a chance to share with young hip people around the world that converting doesn’t necessarily mean a complete and utter lifestyle change. In fact, they attest, whether you’re hipster, preppy, or in a category of your own, you can continue to maintain your individualism, while at the same time belonging to something far greater.

According to a 2013 Pew study, some 48% of millenial Jews were born to intermarried parents, a number that continues to escalate amongst our generation. With more and more young Jews looking at conversion as taboo and embracing Judaism more as a culture, @2HipJews feel somewhat differently: “The process will feel challenging at times, but we’re not treating it like a chore. We’re rising to the challenge and it’s very exciting. It’s definitely brought us closer together.”

“For a lot of people, when they think ‘religious Judaism’ the think about it as a boring lifestyle,” explains the Tzipora (whose father is Jewish) behind the page. “But we’re adamant about showing that you can keep your lives exciting, fun and stylish, while still observing the laws of Judaism.”

“We’re not trying to dismiss any perceptions of science or anything like that either,” adds the Moses behind the concept. “We’ve connected with other religious Jews who use science as a means for explaining religion, so that the two can be compatible and not mutually exclusive.”

As you can see from the images, @2HipJews focuses mainly on fashion, food and lifestyle, offering fun kosher recipes, modest, but stylish attire choices, and more. Moses, for example, boasts how he wears “chinos and Toms” to synagogue. “In terms of attire, the general consensus at synagogue is wearing suits. I’m not comfortable in suits, so I’ve been exploring ways to stay comfortable, stylish yet respectful. It’s a lot of fun."

The two explain that the conversion process began because it’s important for them to have a Jewish family, and are currently taking “baby steps”; doing kiddush every Shabbat, starting to disconnect technologically for 24 hours, etc. “One of the biggest mitzvot in Judaism is building a Jewish home and creating a Jewish family,” explains Moses, who is fully Jewish and born in Israel. “So it’s important for us to be on the same page and go through this process together.”

“I’m happy I’m converting, because I’ve always identified with Judaism, and when I become an ‘official Jew’, I feel I’ll finally be at peace,” adds Tzipora.
