According to recently published statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), Israeli men live some of the longest lives in the world.
Those born in 2012 can expect to live just over 80 years, a shorter life expectancy than only Iceland (81.2), Switzerland (80.7), and Australia (80.5).
Israeli women have an impressive life expectancy of 84 years, not quite reaching the top ten. Japan has the highest average for women, with a life expectancy of 87 years.
Currently, Rabbi Chacham Zechariah Barashi of Jerusalem is Israel’s oldest citizen, at 113 years of age.
The average life expectancy has increased globally by six years since 1990, the WHO reports. Their statistics are based on birth and death certificates, surveys, censuses, and hospital records.
Israel is the only Middle Eastern nation to make the top ten list, which primarily featured European countries.
