A proposed plan to build close to 300 apartments in the West Bank settlement of Ariel – home to 20,000 Jewish settlers, has been given the green light by Israel’s Defence Minister, Ehud Barak.

Although building permits had been given out earlier, there were some diplomatic concerns about marketing the project.

News of the go-ahead comes after a month-long, massive protest in Israel, where citizens flooded the streets, protesting the lack of affordable housing.

Approximately 100 of the 277 apartments, which are expected to be completed in three years, will be inhabited by Jewish families forced from their homes in Gush Katif in 2005.

The Ariel apartment announcement comes shortly after the Interior Ministry’s Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee gave its final approval on the construction of 1,600 housing units in Ramat Shlomo, in eastern Jerusalem, and more than 900 housing units in Har Homa.
