Egyptian-Jewish Businessman says Coca-Cola Egypt Won’t Compensate him for Land
Raphael Bigio, an Egyptian-Jewish businessman, has filed a petition in a United States appeals court, alleging that Coca-Cola Egypt will not pay him despite their use of his family’s expropriated Cairo property, the site of their company headquarters, and asking that the judge restores his family’s lawsuit.
The family property, located in Cairo's Heliopolis suburb, was expropriated in the 1960s by Egyptian President Gamel Abdel Nasser, and despite huge profits made by Coca-Cola Egypt in the subsequent years, the soft drink giant has no interest in negotiating a fair price with the family.
Unfortunately, the Bigios are just one of countless Egyptian Jewish families whose land and property were expropriated and nationalized by Nasser’s ‘Arab Socialist’ regime which stated that “all Jews included in the list of sequestrations are deprived of their civic rights and cannot serve as guardians, caretakers or proxies in any business association or club."
“Our family has always considered the USA as an example of righteousness in this world,” said Raphael Bigio. “Our story is one of flagrant abuse, first by an anti- Jewish government, then by a greedy corporate Goliath. We hope and pray that our case will demonstrate that regardless of who you are, you will be judged in accordance with your deeds and not by what you pretend to be. We have faith that justice can and will ultimately be found in the USA."
