The Day the Music Died: Sam the Record Man Passes Away at 92
Founder of Iconic Record Store Chain, Sam Sniderman Dead
Sadly, like the vinyl records that were synonymous with his stores, the man behind Sam the Record Man. Sam Sniderman, is no longer with us.
Sniderman, surrounded by family, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday at the age of 92.
Anyone familiar with the history of Toronto’s famous – and infamous – Yonge Street strip, knows all too well the famous store with the flashing neon record signs calling out to music lovers since it’s opening in 1959.
The flagship Sam’s closed in 2007, seven years after Sniderman retired.
Sniderman was a Member of the Order of Canada, as well as an inductee into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. He was also the recipient of a Governor General award, as well as Honorary doctorates from Ryerson University and the University of Prince Edward Island.
Sniderman, along with his brother Sid, changed the face of the Canadian retail music business when they first opened a store on Toronto’s College Street in 1937 before they both build the chain of Sam the Record Man stores that dotted Canada, from coast to coast.
