New Jersey Shul Lights up Airport Hangar for Chanukah, Sets Guiness World Record
Over 800 Menorahs Lit on Fourth Night of Holiday
On the fourth night of Chanukah on December 11th, a New Jersey synagogue lit 834 menorahs in an airport hangar setting a new Guinness World Record. The menorah-lightings, which took up close to 100 tables, was planned by the Jewish Centre of Princeton, New Jersey, and organized by the Conservative shul’s programming director, Neil Wise. The 834 menorahs eclipse the record of 782, set last year, by New York’s Merrick Jewish Centre.
“I’m a determined man,” Wise told the The Daily Princetonian. “The Jewish Center ran the event, but this was about the community; this was about all the area’s synagogues and Jewish organizations coming together as one to have one community menorah.”
Over 900 people waited through the long lines for parking and registration in a long-anticipated effort to eclipse the previous record.
