Maccabi Haifa PG Gal Mekel May Be In Full NBA Uniform By Next Season
The Toronto Raptors, Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks have all expressed interest in the Israeli bball star
Israeli point guard Gal Mekel, who just recently lead his Maccabi Haifa team to an Israeli championship over Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv in the Euroleague Final Four, is gaining a reputation over in the States as he continues to be scouted by a multitude of NBA teams, including the Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, Utah Jazz, Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks.
Mekel had demonstrated exceptional skills during a workout with the Jazz last fall, but was unable to attend training camp due to visa issues.
Mekel, a Ramat Hasharon native who played for Wichita State from 2006-2008, has increasing appeal throughout the NBA, thanks to his formidable size, his stellar pick-and-roll abilities and his overall skills as a point guard.
He was declared MVP of the Israeli Basketball Super League two seasons in a row (2011 and 2012), averaging 13.3 points and 5.4. assists a game on 47% shooting. Under the auspices of his coach Brad Greenberg (former general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers, leading his team to a championship only adds more merit to his prowess as a baller.
Mekel scored 21 points and had seven assists in the championship match against Maccabi Tel Aviv. In addition to being named league MVP, he was also crowned as Most Valuable Player of the championship game.
Mekel has played four seasons in Israel as a pro basketball player. He also spent an injury-laden season in Benetton Treviso in Italy during 2011-2012.
According to Marc Stein of ESPN.com, the 25-year-old Mekel auditioned for Dallas on Monday, with Toronto eyeing him as well. It seems Milwaukee is the most serious about acquiring the young Israeli, after the 'eye-opening' workout Mekel participated in there.
The Bucks have reportedly offered Mekel a spot on their summer league roster. Mekel has yet to accept the invitation.
