Oil tanker spill in Lac-Mégantic

Just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, a runaway tanker train carrying crude oil derailed in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec. Subsequent explosions destroyed half the downtown, leaving at least 33 dead, over 2,000 evacuated from their homes, and 17 reported missing.

We were all deeply saddened by this horrific tragedy and we wish to extend our deepest condolences to the families affected.

But condolences are not always enough.

Adhering to our belief in the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), UJA of Greater Toronto has established the Lac-Mégantic Disaster Relief Fund to provide immediate aid where it is needed the most.

One hundred percent of all proceeds collected by UJA of Greater Toronto for this fund will be directed to relief efforts on the ground through the Red Cross and other effective channels, in coordination with Montreal's Jewish Federation.

To contribute to UJA's Lac-Mégantic Relief Fund, please visit ujadonations.com/lac-megantic or call 416-631-5705.
