Move Over Mario, There's A New Hero In Town, And His Name Is Angry Jew [VIDEO]
Shalom Life speaks with Gil Elnekave about the release of his teams’ upcoming video game 'Angry Jew' where you trek around 18th century Eastern Europe combating anti-Semitism
Platform game play is not a new concept. Avatars have been jumping from one suspended platform to another since the early 90s with advanced, side-scrolling blockbusters like Sonic the Hedgehog and the memorable Super Mario Bros. In most platform games, the conventions remain the same: have the avatar bound between platforms and over hurdles in order to advance the game and evade the pitfalls.
But platform games have a new genre to tussle with: the formidable Angry Jew.
Game designers Gil Elnekave, Avishai De Vries, and Edo Frenkel uploaded an alluring game trailer last week onto Youtube. It features 32 seconds of an Angry Jew capering around the woodlands of Eastern Europe, combating the evils of history during the 18th and 19th Century. A time when anti-Semitism riddled Europe where the Papal States mandated Jews to live in ghettos and foisted Christianity and baptism on the population. And of course, the heinous tragedies that took place during World War II and the Holocaust, where two out of three European Jews were murdered.
One of the creators, Gil Elnekave, revealed to Shalom Life that the game was the most-fitting avenue to exploit in order to relay history and to humorously exact a fictive-type of retribution.
“Growing up on those stories and learning of the hardships that Jews had to deal with from their general surroundings, we figured it would be a funny concept if one Jew fights back — a Ninjew. We think it's time that Jews should have a graphic representative in the world of video games! Besides, there's a little angry Jew in each of us.”
For those who are trigger-happy for the jump button and for those who are history hardliners, nitpicking at the historical veracity of games, both players will be pleased to find there is plenty of both fun and fact in the Angry Jew.
“The full game will have 3 different "worlds" — The Exodus, The Spanish Inquisition, and 19th century Europe, each world with its own unique atmospherics and characters. We want to add as many Jewish motifs as possible so it will be full of humor … from our hero riding a dreidel hitting everything in his way, to a time-based mode where our hero must return home before Shabbat begins.”
Slated for a November release this year, gamers will be happy to know that it is android and iOS compatible.
And for players who are easily slighted but the angry “Ninjew”, Gil Elnekave issues a caveat: the Angry Jew is only for those who can stomach Jewish humour.
“Our main goal is to have fun, and to bring a smile to as many faces as we can. Good Jewish humor has been around since Biblical times, and we're hoping to bring it to life in a new medium: video games!”
