It may have taken 36 years, but justice, or, at least, justice according to the U.S. Supreme Court, has finally been served.

In October of 1977 in a St. Louis suburb, Joseph Paul Franklin, a white supremacist, murdered 42-year-old Gerald Gordon in cold blood. Gordon was a guest at a Bar Mitzvah taking place at a Richmond Heights synagogue, Beth Sholom Kneseth Israel, and was shot directly outside the synagogue by Franklin.

Franklin had reportedly found the synagogue from the Yellow Pages. Armed with a sniper rifle, he fired five shots at the parking lot as the crowd was beginning to disperse after the bar mitzvah had ended.

Gordon, a father of three, was the only victim.

Now, 36 years later, Franklin has been executed for his crime in Missouri. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled early Wednesday morning to carry out the death sentence using pentobarbital, a lethal drug method that most American states that uphold the death penalty currently use.

It's important to note that the murder of Gordon was not Franklin's first hate crime driven out of racism and prejudice. The Times of Israel reports that he had bombed a synagogue a few months earlier in Tennessee. Miraculously, there were no injuries.

But Franklin was able to escape, just as he did after shooting Gordon, and went on to target innocent victims of racism for the next three years.

Many of his victims were interracial couples.

In 1980, after murdering two young black men in Salt Lake City, the notorious neo-Nazi was finally arrested in Kentucky. Franklin would go on to be convicted of eight murders; years later, he confessed to committing many of the crimes, including the murder of Gordon in 77. Reports claim he was responsible for 20 deaths between 1977 and 1980.

Franklin was sentenced to death in 1997.

During an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Monday, Franklin claimed he no longer harbours ill feelings towards blacks or Jews.
