Syracuse Second School To Suspend Ties with Al-Quds University

Following a Nazi-style presentation held at Al-Quds, American University Brandeis ended its long-standing relationship with Al-Quds; now Syracuse University has followed suit

On Thursday, Syracuse University “indefinitely” suspended their relationship with the Palestinian Al-Quds University. The change makes Syracuse the second university to sever ties after Islamic Jihad held a Nazi-like demonstration on the campus. The first to do so was American University Brandeis.

In an email to the The Jerusalem Post, Syracuse’s Senior Vice President for public affairs, Kevin Quinn, stated that “We are very disappointed and saddened to have learned of these recent events at Al-Quds University.” He said that Syracuse’s Institute for National Security and Counter-terrorism would end their ties with Al-Quds, just three days after Brandeis.

Sari Nusseibeh, the President of Al-Quds, came under increasing pressure to respond to Brandeis President Frederick Lawrence, and his demand that he condemn the “radical behavior” of the Islamic Jihad rally. “We don’t believe in oppressing freedom of opinion, but respecting it.” he told The Media Line. “I said clearly about what happens in this rally that such manifestations are harmful to the university. The university will not allow the breaching of respect.”

This was a reversal of Nusseibeh’s earlier statement, wherein he said that the university was “often subjected to vilification campaigns by Jewish extremists.” This, however, did not seem a sufficient apology for Brandeis.

Speaking to the Post, Ellen de Graffenreid, Brandeis' Senior Vice President for Communications, said that “I think that Brandeis University leadership and faculty members who were previously involved in the partnership are very carefully monitoring the situation and I think we’re in wait-and- see mode.”

The event that caused Brandeis and Syracuse to sever ties was a November 5 demonstration by Islamic Jihad. It saw members dressed in military uniforms, carry fake assault rifles, and raise their arms in Nazi-style salutes
