We Knew about Hipster Jew Before it was Cool
Our exclusive, random interview with the elusive Chicky and Duckie, founders of the always entertaining Hipster Jew, covering Jewish news and culture for the hip and contemporary
One of the best parts about being a journalist is having a great excuse to talk to people you would otherwise not really have a chance to sit down with.
The staff here at Shalom Life have been reading Hipster Jew for quite a while now and, eventually, I was able to manage contacting Chicky and Duckie, (either those are their actual names, or they've watched one too many episodes of Friends) the founders and chief writers of the blog.
As far as interviews go, these two are some of the cheekiest we’ve come across. You can check out Hipster Jew here, I recommend daily visits.
Last week, I had the distinct pleasure of sitting down (well, emailing) Ducky and Chicky, the two brothers who run Hipster Jew, to talk about the site, why music after 2012 is sooo over, and the intricacies of rating the hipster-ness of coffee.
They were, as expected, delightful.
Shalom Life: Is Hipster Jew part of a growing trend of Jewish men and women breaking from stereotypical conservative, right wing ‘Jewishness’?
Duckie: Yes! We are! All thanks to Jon Stewart and his lovely sarcasm.
Chicky: I blame Hollywood. With all the luster and allure that it has to offer, the hedonism and orgies there have attracted every young Jewish child since The Jazz Singer.
Shalom Life: So, what is a hipster, in your definition?
Chicky: Somehow who is young. And an asshole. A blank portrait to project your anger and hate.
Duckie: I always considered it a slur for anyone under the age of 40.

Shalom Life: Hipster Jew takes on a bunch of different voices, what does the site represent for you?
Duckie: We want people to tell their stories. We want to be a platform for young Jews to speak and make jokes, or judge their peers.
Shalom Life: Looking forward, where do you feel this site going?
Chicky: It's going to move entirely to print, like a newsletter!
Duckie: I keep looking for people who want to tell stories and write original content, but everyone asks me if they can write on the news like we do… or they want to get paid LOL
Shalom Life: What are you listening to right now? Hipsters always have the best music suggestions.
Duckie: The Walkmen just broke up. So I've been sitting in my room sobbing while listening to their album Bows + Arrows, which happens to be my first "break-up album."
Chicky: I'm listening to nothing new. All music created after 2012 is pointless. In fact, music is cliche. I just listen to sounds recorded from nature. [Nothing more hipster than that]
Duckie: He's not lying. He sleeps to the sound of waves crashing and other weird nature crap.
Shalom Life: My coffee is delivered, whole bean, in mason jars by bicycle. It’s organic fair trade and helps a women’s charity in Peru. On the Hipster scale, how’s my coffee ranking?
Chicky: You mean you haven't eaten those beans that are roasted inside a human's anus and then sifted through?
Duckie: That’s a terrible answer. That’s not hipstery. YA WEIRDO. Your coffee bean is a 10, but if you just put it in a coffee pot, you're pulling a 4 there. Cold Brew, French Press, or Pour Over that coffee.
