Miss Israel Doesn't Like Hummus

While visiting New York over the weekend, Yityish Aynaw said she actually wasn't a fan of the country's national food

Yesterday, we reported that chickpeas have been seeing enormous growth in the United States of America, beneficial to farmers nationwide. The catalyst for this uprising of an otherwise forgotten legume?

Americans like hummus.

Though a reported 98% of Israels have hummus in their fridge - their version of ketchup, it seems - a representative of the Holy Land, while visiting New York over the weekend, made a shocking and drastic announcement.

She's not actually such a fan.

While to speaking to New York Daily News, Miss Israel Yityish Aynaw stated that "In Israel, I don’t eat hummus,” to the shock and bewilderment of the New York reporters. "Now I come to New York and I’m supposed to eat hummus? It’s not tasty for me. I don’t like it."

Mind you, she did make this revelation at a popular East Village eatery called the Hummus Place. So you can imagine why the reporters would be flabbergasted.

The 22-year-old Aynaw also revealed that she is a fan of American men - sorry achim - and that she is a fan of New York. "I think I am more beautiful when I come here,” she said of the American city. A bit narcissistic, are we? Maybe it's the lack of hummus. It certainly keeps the rest of us Israelis balanced.

Aynaw is the first Israeli beauty queen of Ethiopian origin, and is currently looking to open a youth center in her hometown of Netanya before she has to give up the Miss Israel crown at the end of this month.

She is currently enrolled in a college outside of Tel Aviv, and was serving the IDF before she became a beauty queen.

“I was an officer in the army and two months later I was a beauty queen,” she said. “Suddenly I was Miss Israel and I had to smile all the time. Life surprises you. You never know what’s next.”
