In New York City, cab driver Gabriel Diaz has lost his license for thirty days after brandishing a Nazi armband emblazoned with a swastika.
Complaints from the public began in March of this year, as Diaz sported the Nazi armband while on duty. Jewish human rights organization the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has urged the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) to take action against the driver.
ADL director Evan R. Bernstein stated that “by openly displaying this hate symbol identified with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party while operating a New York City taxicab, the driver sent a frightening and offensive message to New Yorkers about who might be welcome – and unwelcome - in the taxicab he was driving.”
When confronted by the TLC, Diaz pleaded guilty to all charges, and was suspended under regulations that prohibit “any act that is against the best interests of the public.”
Bernstein applauded the action taken against Diaz.
“In disciplining the driver, the TLC sends a powerful message that such a vehement demonstration of hate is unacceptable, and that there are consequences for those who seek to intimidate others.”
Gabriel Diaz's license has been suspended for 30 days.
