A Staten Island man has been charged in the theft of blank checks from a yeshiva and cashing them for over $50,000.
Yehuda Rubin, 31, was reportedly an ex-student of the Yeshiva of Staten Island and lived nearby. He allegedly cashed 16 checks over a five month period and they were believed to be stolen from the office in 2011.
The checks belonged to Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem, a related school in Manhattan.
The criminal complaint against Rubin alleges that he cashed large checks between August and December 2011 at a Brooklyn check-cashing facility.
Rabbi David Ceder, the yeshiva’s head of security, told the Staten Island Daily that he had no knowledge of the case.
Rubin was initially arrested on May 15 at a routine car stop. He was found to possess marijuana, painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs and amphetamines, court papers allege.
Rubin was arraigned on May 16 in Stapleton Criminal Court on drug and theft charges.
His bail was set at $35,000.
