Meet the Candidates For Israeli Presidency

Meir Sheetrit

Meir Sheetrit is a veteran politician, having represented the Likud Party, the Kadima Party, and currently the Hatnuah Party in the Knesset. Previously the Mayor of Yavne, Sheetrit was first elected to the 10th Knesset and has been Minister of Finance, Justice (twice), and Transportation just to name a few. His Party, which was founded in November of 2012, is a liberal Party which pushes for peace agreements between Israelis and the Palestinians. The Hatnuah Party is also deeply concerned with the environment and hope to pass a Basic Law that will help save the environment in Israel. Although, like all parties, they express social concern, their main focus is really peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Dan Shechtman

A Nobel Prize laureate, Dan Shechtman hopes to change not just the world of science but also that of politics. A former professor at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Shectman was on sabbatical when he discovered quasicrystals. He was given the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2011 for his discovery and work in the field. Should he be elected President, Shechtman will be the first President elected outside of Knesset which, although not impossible, has yet to be seen. Since announcing his candidacy, Shechtman has since claimed that he will consider running for office again if he’s not elected on Tuesday.
