Police Looking Into anti-Semitic Graffiti in Thornhill

A bus shelter was vandalized with a swastika in a city that boasts a large Jewish community

Residents of Thornhill, a city part of the Greater Toronto Area with a thriving Jewish community, were mortified Wednesday after discovering a bus shelter painted with anti-Israel rhetoric, accompanied by a swastika.

The message, spray painted in white, read "F--k Israel," on a bus shelter on Atikinson Avenue, near Bathurst Street. Police say the incident took place between midnight and 7am on Wednesday.

"This sort of hate-motivated crime is unacceptable, it's outrageous. It's disappointing, and we're going to do everything we can to solve this crime," said York Regional Police Sgt. Clint Whitney.

The crime took place just three days after anti-Muslim graffiti was spotted outside of an Islamic centre located nearby. There, several messages were spray-painted at the Jaffari Community Centre on Sunday evening, including "F--k Gaza" and "Arab Go Home."

The incitement of hatred comes on the heels of Israel's ongoing war with Gaza. All over the world, rallies, demonstrations, and acts of vandalism and anti-Semitism have run rampant; all around the web, pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian supporters have been battling with one another, as Operation Protective Edge heads into its 17th day over in Israel.

Police are continuing to investigate the hate crime in Thornhill and are reviewing security footage. Anyone who has any information is instructed to contact the police, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
