The news site Al-Arabiya has reported that the Spanish legislature is planning to announce that it will hold a vote on the recognition of a Palestinian state.
This news comes on the heels of the British parliament voting overwhelmingly in favour of a non-binding motion to support recognition of a Palestinian state on Monday. This vote will not have any effect on government policy, but carries symbolic as Palestinians continue to work to pursue international recognition.
France’s foreign minister, Laurent Fabius, stated on Tuesday that Paris should only recognize a Palestinian state only if it would help to achieve peace, and not simply as a symbolic gesture. He also stated, however, that if negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis fail that Paris “would not shirk it’s responsibilities” but would recognize the Palestinian state.
