The relationship between Israel and Japan has been developing lately, after Japan enlisted the Jewish State as its first ever research & development cooperation agreement partner.

In a bid to keep the partnership strong, the Israeli embassy in Tokyo has launched a new campaign in order to boost tourism from Japan: a seven-part online Anime series called いいね!イスラエル, or “Israel, Like!”

The show's first episode is out now, broadcast on the embassy's official YouTube page (the rest will be out in the coming months), featuring sisters Saki and Noriko as they decide to take a trip to Israel - places like Max Brenner, Jerusalem, and the beach in Tel Aviv all serve as incentive.

The girls eventually take a plane to Tel Aviv and excitement ensues.

The embassy's parrot mascot Shalo-um chan (amazing) serves as a knowledgeable guide - he kind of looks like a cross between Pikachu and Angry Birds, but sporting Israeli colors.

The animation is spot on - particularly with how they depict Tel Aviv - and mind you, while the whole thing's in Japanese, it's still pretty darn entertaining, even if I don't really get what they're talking about (though YouTube does have a closed caption option if you're curious).

Mind you, this isn't really aimed towards my demographic, so I can't complain. And according to Ynet, it's already a huge success:

“The feedback we’re getting for the project is unprecedented," said embassy spokesperson Ronen Mezdinni. "The show is receiving massive media attention all across Japan. The main goal is to showcase the lighter and original aspects of Israeli society all the while paying homage and respect to Japanese popular culture.”
