When more than 300 members of Toronto’s investment community joined 15 of the world’s most respected investment specialists at a key economic conference, the biggest beneficiary of all this investment savvy was the Baycrest Foundation, which is globally renowned for funding education, research and programs on aging.

The November 12 conference, sponsored by Prime Quadrant, a prominent investment research and consulting company, featured some of the best investment minds anywhere, and all registration fee proceeds were designated for Baycrest. In fact, the conference raised at least $200,000 for the Baycrest cause.

“We are incredibly honoured to support Baycrest in this invaluable effort,” said Prime Quadrant principal Mo Lidsky.

Conference participants heard from, among others, experts on real estate, stocks and bonds, White House economic policy and the Canadian economic condition.

Avery Shenfeld, managing director and chief economist for CIBC World Markets, expects slow but steady growth for the Canadian economy over the next couple of years, with low interest rates, which are not likely to rise until at least 2016 – and then, only modestly.

“The Canadian domestic economy has been doing fairly well,” he said.

Byron Wien, vice-chairman of Blackstone Advisory Partners and an iconic figure in the investment world, who shared the global economic update panel with Shenfeld, believes the U.S. economy is going through “a prolonged period of slow growth,” but will still grow faster than European economies.

However, Wien was especially captivating when he summarized his list of life’s lessons that he had learned during his long financial career. Among his digestible doses of advice were “don’t try to be better than your competitors, try to be different,” and “never retire – if you work forever, you can live forever.”
