On Tuesday night, Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky announced a 30% increase in security measures on university campuses.

In terms of logistics, 85 ‘Israel Fellows’ are being sent to 170 university campuses throughout North America, the UK, France, Australia, South Africa and Germany. This is considered the group’s largest initiative since the Jewish Agency was founded in 2003.

Israel Fellows are Israeli college graduates that have been enlisted and trained by the Jewish Agency, then sent overseas to aid campus Hillel staffs. According to their website, “Hillel’s goal is to inspire every Jewish college student to develop a meaningful and enduring relationship to Israeli culture and society.”

Working with the Hillel staff, the Fellows aim to facilitate existing Jewish, Israeli identity and presence on university campuses across the world in light of recent conflict and anti-Israel activity.

"Our goal is to thwart those who seek to confuse young Jews and draw them away from Israel," said Sharansky following a meeting with Israel PM Binyamin Netanyahu.

Additionally, a total of 1,600 emissaries will be dispatched to school campuses across the world where they will stay for an average of one year. This figure includes 1,200 camp counsellors and 400 long-term Fellows.
