Drake and the NBA: Ten Classic Moments

If you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, then you may not know that famous rap star Drake is obsessed with basketball. Close personal friends with Lebron James and Dwayne Wade, Global Ambassador for the Toronto Raptors, and host of this year’s ESPY Awards, the singer is slowly becoming synonymous with the NBA.

You do have to hand it Aubrey, though. Even when he pulls stunts that might even make him look bad, he always take it in stride, and is able to laugh at himself and the hilarious photos of him and other NBA players online (see above).

Of course, spending all this time with some choice athletes is bound to leave us with more than a few memories. So here’s a look back at the top ten most memorable Drake at the NBA moments.

10.

That time he, Lebron James and Dwyane Wade ate pizza on stage

As we all know, Drake happens to be close with some of the finer (and former) members of the Miami Heat. Unfortunately, the rap star couldn’t get into their locker room post-game, but that didn’t stop him from partying with the athletes afterwards. Sharing a pizza and dancing along to music, the trio surprised everyone at the club that night.

9.

That time he busted out a Vince Carter jacket.

Back in January of this year, Drake donned a suit jacket that looked completely normal to the untrained eye. However, he revealed to everyone that there was an old Vince Carter jersey sewn inside the blazer. The jersey was from Carter’s time back with the Toronto Raptors which paid homage to both one of Drake’s favorite NBA players, and his hometown of Toronto. And while Vinsanity has long since dried out in Toronto, the jacket certainly did strike a chord with all of us nostalgic Raptor fans.

8.

That time he assisted Terrence Ross' Slam Dunk at the 2014 All Star Games

If you haven’t figured this out, Drake is very loyal to his hometown of Toronto (represent!) Given the fact that he was at the 2013 Slam Dunk Challenge to cheer on the Raptors own Terrence Ross (who won it that year), it came as no surprise when, back in February, the rap star was there to assist Ross’ dunk at the 2014 NBA All Star Weekend Slam Dunk Challenge. Dressed in a Raptor’s T-shirt, the proud Global Ambassador stood near the net to pass Ross the ball for an incredible between-the-legs dunk.

7.

That time he went apeshit when Demar DeRozan hit a crazy turnaround jumper

It’s always a sight to behold when a celebrity loses their shit, but such was the case when Drake witnessed Demar DeRozan’s astounding basket during the tight first-round playoff series between the Raptors and the Brooklyn Nets last season. Narrowly dodging another player, DeRozan makes an incredible dunk, with Drake standing nearby in complete and utter shock. We’re not sure what was better, the play or Drake’s face.

6.

That time he got the Raptors fined $25K for encouraging Kevin Durant to come play for Toronto

Earlier this week, team ambassador, Drake, unintentionally got his favourite NBA team slapped with a $25k fine when he tried to encourage Kevin Durant, who becomes a free agent in 2016, to consider playing for Toronto. Although he didn’t, technically, try to seriously recruit the player at this year's OVO Festival last week, the NBA took the joke much more seriously and has since given the team a hefty ticket. Booooooo.
