A new direct flight route from Boston to Tel Aviv will feature a football star as one of its passengers. Julian Edelman, Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots and self-proclaimed Jew, will be flying to Israel on Monday as a part of El Al's new direct flights from Boston's Logan International Airport to Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.

Edelman rose to fame thanks in part to his all star-level stats with the New England Patriots last season. The wide receiver for the Super Bowl champions considers himself Jewish, even though he has been intentionally vague on the matter of his religion. Although Edelman's father is Jewish, there is little evidence to suggest that Edelman was brought up Jewish.

However, Edelman has identified himself as Jewish in the past. When asked to give "good Christmas answers" and "Christmas presents" at a press conference last year, Edelman told reporters "I'm Jewish, so I'll try to keep it to Hanukkah presents." Edelman was also found wearing a pin that featured both the American and Israeli flags, given to him by the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Ron Prosor.

Edelman has also posted some very Jewish tweets, most notably a tweet last Passover showing him making a diving catch to grab some Matza.

Edelman, a social media phenomenon, has made time to publicly visit many places during his busy off-season, including a trip to Disneyland, presenting at the Grammys, touring the talk show circuit, and making a cameo in the Entourage movie. Hopefully Edelman will find something a little more spiritual during his trip to the Holy Land, and maybe be inspired to further investigate his Jewish roots. I'm sure Robert Kraft, who was in Israel this week with a delegation of football hall of famers, would love to show him around,
