After being sold to France, Germany, Italy and Russia, the hot Israeli singing competition show Rising Star has finally made it’s way to ABC. Announced on Monday, the network has revealed that it has picked up 10 episodes of Rising Star, scheduled to air during the summer of 2014.

Rising Star is a joint project from Keshet International and DC Media, the same people who brought you both Homeland and So You Think You Can Dance, respectively. Unique to this series, and unlike other singing competitions like The Voice or the X Factor, feedback from the audience is live. The voting system for voice competition formats has been revolutionized. Audiences have the ability to vote using a real-time app during performances, giving artists immediate feedback. If the artist reaches a specific percentage of thumbs up (70% in Israel) they go on in the competition. However, while this voting process is certainly innovative, it is a bit unclear as to how ABC plans to manage multiple time zones. So far, Rising Star has only aired in countries that use a single time zone.

In addition to its new voting system, Rising Star will aim to do something that no singing competition show has done before – completely live episodes. This means no taped auditions or performances and, instead, a completely real time experience. Furthermore artists will no longer be performing in front of a panel of judges, but behind a transparent floor-to-ceiling LED display linked to the voting system that will show the performer how well they are doing during their performances. How long will it take producers like Simon Cowell (X Factor) to embrace the technology of Rising Star?

Rising Star is scheduled to air during the summer when the other, popular singing competition shows such as X Factor, American Idol, and The Voice take a break.
