Former Israeli Baseball Coach Hired as MLB Manager

It’s confirmed.

According to multiple reports, the Detroit Tigers have hired Brad Ausmus, who played in the Major Leagues for eighteen years as a catcher (from 1993 – 2010), as the team’s new manager.

Ausmus most recently managed Israel’s national baseball team, taking them to the Qualification Round of the 2013 World Baseball Classic from May to September 2012.

Though he never managed in the major, or minor leagues for that matter, Ausmus was selected from a list of over 50 names, taking over from retired manager Jim Leyland.

The 44-year-old Ausmus will the 37th manager in Tigers history.

During his 18-year career, Ausmus had played for the Tigers on two separate occasions; both times he was eventually traded. Ausmus ended his career in the big leagues in 2010 while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In a 2009 interview, Ausmus admitted that he isn’t religious, but was made more aware of his heritage by his fanbase.

“I wasn’t raised with the Jewish religion, so in that sense I don’t really have much feeling toward it,” he said. “But, however, in the last 10 or so years, I have had quite a few young Jewish boys who will tell me that I am their favourite player or they love watching me play or they feel like baseball is a good fit for them because it worked for me or it worked for Shawn Green or other Jewish players at the Major League level.”

“It has been a sense of pride. If you can have a positive impact on a kid, I’m all for it,” he added.

Discussing his promotion, Ausmus said “I’m well aware that you don’t generally get dropped into an opportunity with a team like the Detroit Tigers,” according to USA Today. He added that he plans on maintaing bench coach Gene Lamont.

General Manager Dave Dombrowski had much to say regarding his decision. “I was taken back with how impressive he was,” he said. “Every time Brad’s name came up, it was effusive with praise.”

“It certainly has changed over the last eight years or so,” Ausmus said on Detroit’s recent history. “This is a winning franchise. Year in and year out, they’re competing and I should be held for that standard as well.

“We think he’s going to be a very good big league manager for a long time and help us win right now,” added Dombrowski. “That was always part of our process. Can he help us win right now? And the answer was yes.”
