Francis Bacon’s 1969 triptych, “Three Studies of Lucian Freud”, has become the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction. Said work, which depicts Bacon’s friend and fellow painter Freud, sitting on a wooden chair, fetched a cool $142 million US at the Christie’s auction in New York after 10 minute of bidding. The painting has now superseded the previous record set in May 2012, when Edvard Munch’s famed “The Scream” sold for $119.9 million at Sotheby’s.

Know for his triptychs, the painting is widely considered one of Bacon’s great masterpieces. Freud (grandson of Sigmund Feud) was famed for his portrait paintings, and considered to be one of the greatest British of the 20th century.

“It marks Bacon and Freud’s relationship, paying tribute to the creative and emotional kinship between the two artists,” Francis Outred, head of Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie’s Europe, told BBC.

This marks the first time that “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” has been put up for auction. Christie’s had estimated it would sell for roughly $85 million. The auction house did not disclose the identity of the buyer.
