French Jews Take Youtube to Court over Quenelle

A French Jewish student union has petitioned a French court to remove the Dieudonne video where he claims 2014 is the year of the quenelle

And Dieudonne’s incitement of anti-Semitism continues to make headlines, just days after a chilling video was posted showing thousands of French men and women marching down Paris chanting anti-Semitic slogans, and singing a song he wrote that mocks the Holocaust.

Now, a Jewish student union has filed a petition to a French court, ordering that YouTube remove a video where Dieudonne celebrates the quenelle, the anti-Semitic gesture which has been gaining momentum in France.

Dieudonne has had eight convictions from French courts for inciting racial hatred, and has declared 2014 as “the year of the quenelle.” Sadly, so far, he wouldn’t be wrong in this statement.

For those who don’t know, the quenelle is performed by folding an arm over one’s chest while pointing downward with the other. On December 31, the gesture was decried as a “salute of anti-semitic hatred” by Interior Minister Manuel Valls. Some practitioners argue that it is simply “anti-establishment.”

As the French Liberation daily reported on Wednesday, a preliminary ruling of the union’s petition against Youtube is expected to be handed down on Feb 12.

As reported by the paper, the video currently has more than 3.5 million views.

The petition comes following a similar legal battle last year, where the UEJF decreed that twitter is required to divulge details about users who violated France’s hate speech laws by promoting anti-Semitsm.

Likewise, earlier this week the Jewish community of Annecy filed a complaint against unidentified individuals who painted a swastika over a memorial plaque dedicated to Jewish children murdered in the holocaust.
