Germany’s Nazi Past Reemerges At FIFA Games

Hitler-era jerseys and neo-Nazi supporters wreak havoc in Brazil

Coming into the 2014 World Cup tournament, Germany was not only a favorite to win the tournament, but was voted the most popular country in the world. Yet, even though Germany’s popularity was high, it now may be waning after a few controversies that have seen the country’s Nazi past re-emerge.

These few controversies arose with an exhibit of historical soccer jerseys in Salvador, Brazil that have flared into controversy because of its inclusion of a 1934 German replica uniform. The white garment with a reichsadler, or imperial eagle, perched on a swastika has many wondering who could have made such an insensitive idea for this exhibit.

However, others believe that, although these Nazi jerseys are definitely insensitive, their exhibition for historical significance are perfectly valid, according to Chile fan Leonardo Duarte, reveals TIME Magazine. “It actually represents a time that I don’t know that well, but that was really negative in world history,” he said.

Meanwhile, during Saturday’s match between Ghana and Germany, a man covered in Nazi markings—including an “HH” for “Heil HItler” and an SS for the infamous Nazi organization—invaded the field, and evaded stewards. It fell to Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari to remove him, after security didn’t take any measures to do so.

This action was an unfortunate one and according to FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer, ”We do not respect any discriminatory messages. We are always taking any evidence or submissions to our disciplinary committee.”

Also at the Germany-Ghana match, as Instagram reveals, some German fans were dressed in the inappropriate “blackface,” using black makeup on themselves and wearing homemade Ghana jerseys. Naturally, this has offended many as well.

It seems that the 2014 World Cup has had ups and downs and has been completely unexpected in many ways.
