Summer camp.

For many, it’s a wonderful period that suggests roasting marshmallows by the campfire, making new friends, being on your own without your parents for the first time, swimming, canoeing, playing sports, and all that jazz.

Parents these days, particularly Jewish parents, have a great sense of nostalgia when it comes to summer camp, as it was, for their parents before them, a method of introducing their children to fellow members of the tribe.

Growing up in a Jewish suburb, every friend I met regaled of his/her experiences at summer camp, the experiences had, the wonder of the great outdoors, etc.

However, there are also a great number of teens – a number that is increasing in today’s tech-geared world – that aren’t interested in making friends in the physical sense.

There are also a number of parents who don’t want to fork out the cash to send their kids away for the summer.

For both these slightly anti-social teens and understandably economical parents, Google has offered a solution: cyber summer camp. All it requires is a Google+ account, a smartphone, tablet or laptop, there’s no need to pack a bag, provides real life experiences with your teens, and, here’s the kicker, it’s free.

Now in its third year, the Maker Camp offers six weeks of free camps of “building, tinkering and exploring,” bringing teens on a virtual adventures and field trips to locations like Legoland in Denmark. The various camps will also allow teens to use Google Hangouts to discuss with renowned artists and inventors, and even build creative projects.

Google’s Maker Camp begins today, with the final week of projects beginning on August 11th.

For those teens who ARE indeed interested in attending a camp in the physical sense, Google is also setting up shop at various US libraries, schools and museums.
