Google Teams Up with Audi, GM, Honda to Integrate Android into Cars

The search engine giant looks to make talking cars a thing of the present by teaming with top car makers in the industry

For those frustrated with their current car GPS, or for those obsessed with, and would like to recreate the hit TV show Knight Rider, a solution is on the horizon: Google has just announced partnerships with some of the world’s leading car companies to integrate Android technology into their cars.

To do so, Android has formed the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) with auto and tech companies Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai and Nvidia. The OAA has formed to make “technology in the car safer, more seamless and more intuitive for everyone,” according to their website, integrating the apps and services Android users regularly use into the driving experience.

As phones are banned on the roads more and more worldwide, Google’s announcement marks their first major attempt to bring Android technology to cars with safety in mind, by foregrounding seamless integration with other devices rather than treating cars as completely separate devices. “Common platforms allow for one connected experience across our phone, tablet and PC,” Android says, “But there’s still an important device that isn’t yet connected as seamlessly to the other screens in our lives – the car.”

Google is looking to integrate Android apps into dashboard displays and controls, fully integrating cars into the Android experience, or perhaps the other way around. While this isn’t the first time a car has run Android, the Roewe 350 had a DVD/GPS feature that ran the latest Android at the time, the Alliance marks a concentrated effort to make Android less a specialized feature and more a seamless part of the user’s everyday experience.

As Google says, “Putting Android in the car will bring drivers apps and services they already know and love… and it will create new opportunities for developers to extend the variety and depth of the Android app ecosystem in new, exciting and safe ways.” Whatever these opportunities may be, we are excited to test drive them when they are made available.
