IDF Twitter Account Hacked

Attack reportedly perpetrated by Syrian Electronic Army

The IDF’s main twitter account, @IDFSpokesperson, was hacked into Thursday night, with hackers sending out a fake tweet that warned about a nuclear lake at the Dimona nuclear plant in Israel.

@IDFSpokesperson has since tweeted an apology for the incident.

The hacking took place in the wake of rocket attacks onto Israel from Gaza, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued an ultimatum to Hamas for them to stop, or to face an Israeli strike.

The Syrian Electronic Army has since confirmed that they were the culprits behind the hacking. The IDF have since deleted the tweet, and claimed they would “combat terror on all fronts including the cyber dimension.”

The IDF, of course, are referring to the heightened tensions that have risen between Israelis and Palestinians over the last week, spawning with the death of three Israeli teenagers who were murdered, Israel alleges, by members of Hamas, and after a Palestinian teenager was kidnapped and murdered in East Jerusalem, which Netanyahu and the entire Jewish world has condemned.

The IDF has since intensified its search for the kidnappers/murderers of Eyal Yifrach, 19, Naftali Fraenkel, 16, and Gil-ad Shaar, 16.

This isn’t the first time the Syrian Electronic Army has hacked into a well-regarded Twitter account or news website; over the past year, they’ve successfully hacked into CNN, AP, the Washington Post, and the New York Times.
