Harmony Korine’s latest film, Spring Breakers, is aiming for a December release date in hopes of being considered for the 2012 Academy Awards.

Spring Breakers debuted at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year to critical acclaim. It was very popular among both critics and moviegoers at The Toronto International Film Festival in September, with special attention given to James Franco’s character ‘Alien’.

If Spring Breakers gets a December release date, could Franco possibly win an Academy Award for his performance as an over-the-top drug dealer with cornrows?

“What Matthew McConaughey did for ‘Magic Mike’, Franco does for ‘Spring Breakers’: Each pushes their star power past parody as the debauched MC holding court over a motley crew of hard-bodied, in-too-deep young ones,” writes Vulture movie critic, Kyle Buchanan after the Spring Breakers screening at TIFF.

There has been a lot of Oscar buzz around McConaughey’s Magic Mike role leading to an Oscar nomination. Will he be up against Franco?

Early predictions for Best Supporting Actor also include Philip Seymour Hoffman for The Master, Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln, Robert De Niro for Silver Linings Playbook, Alan Arkin and John Goodman for Argo, Russell Crowe for Les Miserables, and William H. Macy for The Sessions.

Spring Breakers also stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Corine.
