In an international friendly on Sunday night in Houston, Israel defeated the World Cup-bound Honduras 4-2.

Speaking through a translator, Honduras’ coach Luis Fernando Suarez said “I thought there were a lot of individual errors, and the other team attacked well. The second half we risked a lot more, and we were trying for the draw. I saw this coming. We had a lot of subs and changes. I thought the team had some miscommunication and it didn’t work well.”

Israel’s coach, Eli Guttman spoke warmly of the win, noting that “Second half we started again very bad, and they had the amazing goal by Espinoza. Then we came back and we didn’t control the ball like we did in the first half, but we were very dangerous. I thought we deserved the win.”

Omer Damari and Gil Vermouth both scored in the second half to put Israel ahead.

“I think that our midfield really controlled the field,” added Guttman. “The defense line of Honduras was very deep, and we managed to make penetration from the second line. Very, very smart movement. The numbers extended.”

Israel’s other game in the week, against Mexico, ended in a 3-0 lost.

While the blue-and-whites didn’t qualify for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup tournament, their presence will be felt in other ways. Israeli company LiveU will be streaming the games around the globe for everyone watching online, and Israeli-based Risco Group will also be providing security and protection throughout the tournament.

As for the Israeli hopes of making it to a world-class soccer tournament, there’s always EURO 2016.
