Israeli Radio Apologizes For Mocking Orthodox Jews

On Army Radio’s late night program, comedian Niv Majar and host Noa Tzinman said haredim Jews "stink because they eat matzoh balls"

On the eve of Yom Haatzmaut – Israeli Independence Day – radio host Noa Tzinman was hosting comedian Niv Majar on Army Radio’s late night program, talking about this and that, a little bit of Jewish talk, Israel politics, oh, and cannibalism.

Majar joked that a good way to control Israel’s population would be through cannibalism. Obviously.

“We should go ahead and depopulate,” Majar said. “But there’s a paradox here because the people whose population I would like most to reduce are the Haredim, but they probably taste awful, bland.”

Joking along – though the rhetoric was steering towards the offensive at this point – Tzinman added, “They stink because they eat Matzoh balls.”

Ouch.

On Friday, Army Radio retracted the statements, and released an official apology about making such a statement about the Haredi Orthodox Jewish community. The station said it “rejects offensive statements that were made about the Haredi public on Independence Day eve by a guest interviewee.”

Army Radio added that the jokes were “inappropriate and represent neither the station’s views nor its staff.”

Tzinman and Majar made the comments on the heels of a growing debate in Israel on the conscription of Haredi Jews into the IDF, as a new law was recently passed that will require them to do so.

There has since been a growing backlash from the haredi community regarding this decision.
