Approximately 2,500 schools across Israel took part in “Recycling for a Goal,” an initiative which began eight years ago, designed to help the environment.

The recycling project, which comes under the auspices of the ELA Recycling Cooperation and rewards schools with special grants for equipment purchases, was a tremendous success with schools nationwide collecting approximately 2.5 million bottles for recycling.

The monetary amount of the 2,500 bottles collected is approximately NIS 734,000, or roughly $200,000. In all, over 18 million bottles have been collected in close to 300 communities.

The winning school in this year’s installment of the recycling initiative – which includes secular, Arab and religious schools – is the Al-Rashidiya Secondary School in east Jerusalem which snapped up some 83,000 bottles.

For its first-place efforts, the school one NIS 25,000 ($6,800).

Second place went to Moshe Sharet High School in Holon, which collected 45,000 bottles and received a NIS 14,000 ($3,800) grant, while third place and NIS 11,500 ($3,200) went to Nuf Zurim High School on Zur Yigal.
