Israelis Call for 'Vengeance' in New Facebook Campaign

In the mere two days since the tragic news came to light that our kidnapped Israeli boys would never be coming home, thousands of Israelis have been turning to social media to express their pain, sorrow, and also, anger.

Some even created a Facebook page called “The People of Israel Demand Vengeance!” which has, in this incredibly short time, already garnered over 32,000 likes.

Throughout the page, hundreds of photos can be seen with Israelis holding up signs demanding revenge against those who killed our three innocent teenage boys: Naftali Fraenkel, Gil’ad Shaar and Eyal Yifrach.

Several also hold signs demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu increases his military campaign in the West Bank and Gaza. Many of the photos depict Israelis holding signs that promote anti-Arab slogans.

And to make a tragic and complicated affair even worse, the news of the kidnapping and murder of a 16-year-old Arab has now spawned several media outlets to ask if the killing was one of “revenge” and retaliation for the murders of the three Israeli teens.

Many commented on these articles, praising whoever killed the teen. Israeli leaders, however, rightfully condemned the murder, with Netanyahu calling it “reprehensible.”

The Facebook group’s administrators posted onto the page earlier today, saying “Many have been asking if vengeance means killing innocent people. No… The goal of this group is to avenge the blood of those kidnapped, Naftali Fraenkel, Gil-ad Shaar and Eyal Yifrach, of blessed memory. To catch the terrorists who kidnapped and killed them, and exact vengeance.”

While this is a noble and rational objective, the page will no doubt also further the bridge between Israelis and Arabs during this difficult and uneasy period.

Following the funerals of the three slain Israeli teens Tuesday, 47 nationalist Jewish demonstrators, who were chanting anti-Arab slogans and calling out “Death to the Arabs”, were arrested by Israeli police.

According to the Times of Israel, an Arab woman was discriminated against by a group of teenagers at a pedestrian mall who poured water on her and told her to leave.

Naturally, the murder of the teens has shaken up Israeli residents and Jews alike. But is resorting to such boorish behaviors really the answer? Shouldn’t we be uniting in prayer and standing together in solidarity instead?
