At a White House event held Thursday announcing his nomination, Jack Lew, the current White House chief of staff and a man who might just become America’s first Orthodox secretary of the US Treasury, shared some very personal memories and his dreams of youth.

“These dreams were nurtured in a home where the gifts of American freedom and opportunity were cherished and never taken for granted,” Lew said “I will always be grateful to my parents for grounding me in the values that have remained central to my personal and professional life.”

President Obama was quick to compliment Lew, who quickly became an important component of the President’s administration.

“I trust his judgment, I value his friendship. I know very few people with greater integrity,” said President Obama who spoke of Lew’s importance, saying that he often sought Lew’s advice on “virtually every decision that I’ve made, from economic policy to foreign policy.”

As expected, Lew’s nomination was welcomed by a number of Jewish groups.

In a statement , The National Jewish Democratic Council praised Lew for serving as “a prominent bridge to the American Jewish community while bringing his own Jewish values into public life,” while The Orthodox Union delivered Lew “a hearty ‘Mazel Tov!’”
