Jake Gyllenhaal Lived Like a Coyote For ‘Nightcrawler’ Preparation

Gyllenhaal lost over 30 pounds, lived like a coyote, and tagged along with paparrazi all for this new role.

Loosing a few pounds or working out for a new role isn’t unheard of in Hollywood and, in fact, these actor transformations tend to add to the art of acting itself. However, there are some actors who just take things a smidge too far and one of those actors might just be heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaal. For his upcoming film Nightcrawler, the actor underwent some serious character preparation for his role as a sleazy crime reporter.

When you watch the promo video for Nightcrawler, one of the first things you notice about Gyllenhaal is his incredibly lithe frame and his sunken cheeks. Gyllenhaal dropped from 180 pounds to a startling 150.

“I would try to eat as few calories as possible,” he told Vanity Fair. “I knew if I was hungry that I was in the right spot. Physically, it showed itself, but chemically and mentally, I think it was even a more fascinating journey. It became a struggle for me.”

And now we know why he’s so angry when he growls, “You have to make a money to buy a ticket!” at the camera during the promo. It’s because he’s starving.

In addition, he also lived on and off camera like an animal – specifically a coyote. He spent most of his time out at night, vintage-clothes shopping and inspiration hunting.

“There was a general sense that he was a coyote,” Gyllenhaal explained, “I just wanted to live that way.”

And if that isn’t surprising enough for you, Gyllenhaal did what most other celebrities avoid – spending time with paparazzi. The actor revealed he went on ride-alongs with actual paparazzi who thrillingly went news hunting.

“There was a car that went over the 101 Freeway down a ridge and crashed into a wall,” he says. “We arrived 30 seconds before the cops got there.”

Nightcrawler debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival next week. The film’s reception will tell us if Jake’s intense method-acting preparation was all worth it.
