Each February, university campuses around the world host anti-Israel events, usually under the banner of Israel Apartheid Week. Jewish students often feel uncomfortable and sometimes even unsafe when the initiative comes to their school.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the United States Department of Education’s civil rights office is looking into complaints made by two Jewish students against the University of California, Berkeley.

The students who recently graduated, alleged that by failing to stop anti-Israel demonstrations the university helped create a hostile climate for Jewish students on campus. Further, they claimed that several events that took place during Israel Apartheid Week incited anti-Semitic hate speech.

A representative of the university, Dan Mogulof, explained that the protests associated with Israel Apartheid week were protected by the constitution and that the University made every effort to assure a safe and inclusive atmosphere for all students.

However, one of the lawyers representing the Jewish students, Joel Siegal, said the anti-Israel protestors from the Muslim Student Association and Students for Justice in Palestine took their activism far beyond what is constitutionally protected under the law.
