Welcome to Jewish Top 10s, where we compile lists that highlight the best and the brightest of everything yehudi, from delicious recipes to funniest actors, to most obnoxious Jewish wedding songs.

This week’s Top 10’s doesn’t even require an introduction; if there’s one thing Jews are associated with more than neuroses, paranoia, guilt trips, and overbearing mothers, it’s comedy. For as long as comedy has been celebrated in Hollywood, Jews have had a helping hand in establishing the genre as one of the most popular in show business.

We all know the classics, from Groucho Marx to Jackie Mason, icons who have paved the way for a new school of revolutionary Jewish comedians who continue to find innovative and hilarious ways to make us laugh. Without further ado, Shalom Life presents the Top 10 Contemporary Jewish Comedians.

10.

NAME: Andy Samberg

HOMETOWN: Berkeley, California

SHTICK: SNL; Hot Rod; I Love You, Man; Celeste and Jesse Forever

Andy Samberg has displayed his prowess amongst a multitude of forums; as a writer, rapper, singer, actor, and comedian, Samberg has become the most recognized comedians from the new school of Saturday Night Live performers. Samberg had particular emphasis on the SNL Digital Shorts, and also, alongside Justin Timberlake, released the super popular ‘Dick in a Box’.

Samberg, though isn’t particularly religious, comes from a Jewish family, and his maternal grandfather served as an executive member of the American Jewish Congress. He’s become popular due to his roles in films like Hot Rod and I Love You, Man, not to mention alongside his talented cohorts in the two/thirds Jewish rap group, The Lonely Island.

9.

NAME: David Cross

HOMETOWN: Atlanta, Georgia

SHTICK: Mr. Show; Modern Family; Arrested Development

David Cross, better known as Tobias Fünke from this generation’s greatest Jewish show, Arrested Development, first paved his way as a stand up comedian along with Louis C.K, Janeane Garofalo and other startup comedians at a famous comedy club called ‘Catch a Rising Star’. Forming a sketch comedy group called ‘Cross Comedy’, he established an original and entertaining method of relating to his audience, playing tricks on them and even incorporating fake hecklers into the routine.

He released a one-hour comedy special on HBO in 1999 called ‘the Pride is Back’ where he blended satire and political commentary into humour. In 2004, he was nominated for a Grammy for Best Comedy Album. He’s worked with pretty much every popular Jewish comedian on the planet, and despite his success, continues to remain humble.

He’s also, according to an interview with Playboy, snorted cocaine in the same room as President Obama.
