Outspoken comedienne, Joan Rivers, surprisingly received applause from an audience after verbally attacking a PETA (People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals) activist on Tuesday.

In New York City, Rivers was hosting a book signing for her latest comedic memoir entitled ‘Diary of a Mad Diva’. On it’s cover, the 81-year-old is draped in a fur coat.

Surrounded by anti-fur signs, including one that altered Rivers’ book cover to portray her holding a skinned animal, one PETA member asked why she chooses to wear fur during the question period.

Rivers was respectful at first, insisting that she supported the campaigners being at the event and their belief system. But, when one of them interrupted her, Rivers shot back saying “Oh shut up, you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.”

She followed up with comment with an explanation about her fur choices and love of animals.

“Number one, all the fur I wear has been killed over the years and those furs can either lie in my cellar or go to the opera,” she joked.

“Number two, I totally agree with you but there are other issues, I also work very hard, I have four rescue dogs so we all do what we do,” she added in a more serious tone.

This explanation satisfied the audience, as she received a mass applause.

It is unclear whether PETA plans to attend Rivers’ other book signing events during her tour.
