Judd Apatow Guest-Edits Vanity Fair’s First-Ever Comedy Issue

Paul Rudd, Jim Carrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Megan Fox, and others appear in the 19-page spread

‘This is 40’ director, Judd Apatow, guest-edits Vanity Fair’s first-ever comedy issue. For the special edition, Apatow gathered some of Hollywood’s most popular comic actors (most of them also close friends) to contribute to the 19-page spread in some capacity.

The cover comedians- including Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Megan Fox, Megan McCarthy, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Kristin Wiig, Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Will Ferrell- write and pose for Mark Seliger’s portfolio and thematic covers.

Vanity Fair has released three covers. The first is inspired by ‘Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In’, with Mann posing as Goldie Hawn, McCarthy dressed as Lily Tomlin’s Edith Ann, Rudd as the show’s host, and Fox as a sexy bellhop. The second features Carrey as Evel Knievel, Rudolph in Egyptian attire, Ferrell as a cowboy, and Poehler as a go-go girl, while the third depicts Wiig as Cher alongside Stiller as Sonny Bono, with Rock as Nipsey Russell and Seinfeld in a Nehru jacket.

Apatow is only the third person to guest-edit an issue of Vanity Fair since Graydon Carter took over editorial duties 20 years ago. In 2007, Bono guest-edited an Africa issue, and in 2006, Tom Ford guest-edited the Hollywood Portfolio.

“It can reasonably be said that the comedy industry is booming these days, in movies, on television, and onstage. And who better to oversee an entire issue on the subject than one of the great impresarios of the business? . . . Judd was a terrific collaborator, brimming with suggestions and infectious energy—precisely the sort of high-wattage, Hollywood-style enthusiasm that can alternately excite you and drive you a bit crazy,” Carter said in his month’s editor’s letter.

In addition to the comedians featured on the magazine’s cover, Conan O’Brien, Lena Dunham, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, and many more contribute to Apatow’s Comedy Portfolio.

Louis C.K answers Vanity Fair’s popular feature, the Proust Questionnaire, while Jimmy Fallon stars in the Out to Lunch column.
