Maccabi Tel Aviv Coach Headed for the NBA?

American David Blatt says he’s "very interested" in returning to the States and coaching in the big leagues

Fresh off the heels of a triumphant championship win in Milan, Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv head coach David Blatt is feeling good. And why shouldn’t he?

The American-born coach led the Israeli team, against all odds, to a riveting final four matchup, and, when no one believed they could defeat Real Madrid, they managed to do just that in overtime with a 98-86 win, sending the entire State of Israel into a blue-and-yellow frenzy.

The celebrations continue to take place in Tel Aviv as we speak, commencing with Rabin Square being lit up in blue and yellow.

Now, Blatt, feeling pretty positive about his place in professional sports, has admitted that, should he be offered, he’d definitely be interested in a position coaching in the big leagues.

There is “no doubt in my mind I could do the job,” Blatt said to USA Today on coaching an NBA franchise back in the States. He added that he would be “very interested,” but that, of course, there “a lot of great coaches in the States.”

On Tuesday, NRG quoted Blatt as saying that making it to the NBA was his current objective. “In order for this to materialize, they have to want me,” he said, adding, “I am not at the top of the list, or at least I wasn’t until the Euroleague win with Maccabi.”

Basketball blog the Sheridan Report notes that both the Utah Jazz and the New York Knicks are possibly interested in acquiring Blatt, an American-Israeli dual citizen who was raised in Massachusetts, played at Princeton, and became a pro basketball player in Israel during the 1980’s.

He’s been affiliated with Maccabi Tel Aviv as a coach since 1993.
