After being on the receiving end of much controversy and criticism for one of their upcoming television series, National Geographic Channel is pulling the plug on Nazi War Diggers, a series that involves unearthing Nazi war graves.

National Geographic cites the cancellation of this series, previously scheduled to premiere this May 2014 globally, as a decision to “properly review questions raised in recent days regarding accusations about the program”.

However, last Friday, National Geographic appeared to be very defensive in lieu of the new show, calling the criticism unfounded as it was based on publicity materials that didn’t “provide important context about our team’s methodology”. The same “publicity materials” mentioned above have since been pulled from the channel’s website.

National Geographic also insisted that none of the artifacts found during the unearthing of Nazi graves would be sold, but instead donated to war museums. Unfortunately for the channel, critics somehow managed to find a posting on a military collectors online forum featuring a Lativian war helmet ready for sale.

Tony Pollard, director of the Center for Battlefield Archaeology at the University of Glasgow, who has appeared on National Geographic several times, is very displeased about the whole ordeal.

“This is treasure hunting, not archaeology,” he says, “I have seen human remains brandished like trophies before, but in dodgy Youtube videos. The trailer on the Internet was absolutely shocking, and very damaging for National Geographic.”
