neo-Nazi Bus Driver Has ”Not See’ Vanity Plate

Shawn Calpito, a self-declared neo-Nazi, was driving with a license plate that reads ‘Not See,’ a pun on the word Nazi, accompanied by a swastika

In the application for a vanity plate in the great state of California, you must put a reason for your choice, the message you are trying to convey by having a customized plate.

It seems San Diego bus driver Shawn Calpito failed to check the “racist/hate speech” box in his application.

The Californian resident managed to get a plate that reads “Not See,” a variation on the word “Nazi” and even coupled it with a Swastika to make sure that those driving behind him understood what the entire application process at the Department of Motor Vehicles managed to skip.

Shawn Calpito drives a school bus and he is a neo-Nazi, but one who doesn’t like his opinions challenged. His Facebook page has been removed and, when a local news crew went to his house to ask him about the plates, he refused to answer his door. The car had its plates removed as well, and the Nazi symbol was nowhere to be seen. But Calpito might as well keep those plates off, as they have been suspended by the DMV, who wants them back.

In an interview with ABC 10 News, civil rights lawyer Jim McElroy argued against criticisms that support Calpito’s right to free speech. “This is not what I would call a legitimate political belief, this is hatred,” argues McElroy, “The Nazis annihilated six million Jews.”

Parents of children who ride Calpito’s school bus are worried about what he may be saying on the job to young people, but they can breathe a sigh of relief, albeit temporarily. Calpito has been suspended from his job pending an investigation into his behaviour. Tammy Gillies, the regional director of the Anti-Defamation League San Diego, told ABC 10 News, “We are very pleased with the swift action of the school district.”
