New Study Suggests Artificial Sweeteners Harmful For Diabetics

A new study from Israel, published in the journal Nature, reveals that artificial sweeteners may do more harm for diabetics than good. A recent study conducted on mice finds that artificial sweeteners may have the ability to change how our bodies handle sugar, allowing for higher blood sugar levels in diabetics who regularly opt for the low calorie sugar counterpart.

According to the Associated Press, supplements including saccharin, sucralose, and aspartame were given to 20+ mice. The sugar replacements were added to their water, while other mice were given sugar water, and some just plain water. After the course of eleven weeks all the mice were given a dose of sugar to see how their bodies were able to handle it. Those who’d only ingested water or sugar water were able to properly handle the sugar, while those on the artificial sweeteners had a difficult time absorbing the sugar normally into their system.

A second study was conducted, this time with non-diabetic volunteers, who filled out a questionnaire about how often, and how much, artificial sweetener they regularly ingest. Those who used the most artificial sweetener had a tendency to reflect higher blood sugar levels.

In a third round of studying, seven participants who regularly abstained from artificial sweetener were given doses of saccharin over the course of week. Four out of the group, come the end of the week, showed a change in their gut bacteria leading them to be unable to process the sugar as well as they used to.

However James Hill, an obesity expert from the University of Colorado, claimed, “”I do not think there is enough data yet to lead to a definitive conclusion about artificial sweeteners and the body’s handling of sugar… I certainly do not think there is sufficient evidence to conclude that they are harmful.”
